The best natural deodorants. Personal care products are one of the biggest offenders when it comes to exposing us to toxic chemicals. In the US personal care products are not regulated for safety as they are in some countries. This leaves us exposed to many chemicals that are known to be harmful.

I have shared how we try to use products that are as natural as possible in our home, and personal care products are among the most important since they come in contact with our skin.

What Causes Body Odor

Body odor is caused by a few things. Hormones, diet, chemical load, and bacteria being the main of the causes of bad body odor.

Eating a clean diet, with no, or minimal processed foods can help reduce body odor. Balancing hormones can also be a big key in helping reduce it. Detoxing your arm pits can help (more on that in just a bit), as can killing the bacteria (read on for some more information).

Toxins in Deodorants on the Market

The problem with many of the deodorants on the market is the toxic load they carry. The Paleo Hacks Blog has done a great job in highlighting the toxic ingredients commonly found in deodorants, as well as the reason they are of concern.

Your skin absorbs whatever is put on it, so daily use of these toxic ingredients in deodorants is a big problem.

“A study published in the American Journal of Public Health looked into the skin’s absorption rates of chemicals found in drinking water. It showed that the skin absorbed an average of 64% of total contaminant dosage. Other studies found the face to be several times more permeable than broad body surfaces and an absorption rate of 100% for underarms and genitalia. And another peer-reviewed study showed 100% absorption for fragrance ingredients.”

Natural Deodorants

Here are some of my favorite natural deodorants that are super clean and keep you smelling fresh all day. I have used each of these through hot summers, and sweaty Krav Maga classes (and if they work through that, they will work through just about anything!).

Lime Juice

This is probably the easiest and oddest one that I have tried, but boy does it work!

sliced lime as deodorant

Lime juice. Yes, you read that correctly. Lime juice is a great natural deodorant. The citric acid contained in the lime juice kills the odor causing bacteria that breaks down your sweat.

That said, you should use caution after shaving (it can sting) or when going out in the sun after applying (I never experienced getting sun burnt in my arm pits, but if you are going to be exposed to sun just be careful of your pits.

I just cut up a lime and kept the slices in a container in the refrigerator. Others have juiced the limes, strained, and stored the juice in a spray bottle in the fridge.

American Provenance

American Provenance has both men’s and women’s deodorants in some fun scents. They promise that their deodorants contain “No Parabens, No Sulfates, No Aluminum, No Artificial Ingredients”.

Earthley Mineral Deodorants

Earthley offers two types of deodorant in several wonderful scents.

“We combined the best qualities of our Mineral Deodorants and our Detoxifying Pit Mask to create Mineral Deodorant PLUS!

We still use the same base ingredients to keep your skin nourished and dry while adding a bit of French green clay.

The amount we include is not enough to stain clothes, but it is enough to pull toxins out of your body and trap them.

Less toxins=healthier body and less odor!”

The Mineral Deodorant PLUS is available in Grapefruit-Juniper, Lemon-Mint, Ginger-Lime, and Unscented. All essential oil scents chosen to help your lymphatic system.

nontoxic mineral deodorants

“We use the simplest, cleanest ingredients to make our all-natural Mineral Deodorant.

Mango butter and apricot oil combine to gently nourish the skin, while arrowroot powder helps to keep skin dry. Magnesium detoxes, reduces odor, and has tons of health benefits too! Pure essential oils are added for a pleasant scent.”

The Mineral Deodorant comes in Lavender, Citrus, Woods, Spring Blossoms, Rustic, Vanilla Bean (my second favorite), Unscented, and Seasonal (Sept 3rd-) Pumpkin Spice (my favorite-I stock up enough to last a good ways into the year!).

Detoxing Your Pits

Over time toxins can build up in your pits. Your arm pits are an important part of your lymphatic system that is a part of your circulatory and immune systems. Especially if you have ever used conventional deodorants or use any convention personal care products that are on the market.

Making the switch to natural deodorants can sometimes be hindered by the adjustment period your body goes through.

“Switching to a natural deodorant is something that everyone should do, but during the transition, sometimes you can notice your body odor more. It’s part of your body detoxing and getting rid of the toxic build up that chemical antiperspirants cause. “
