Stewardship

Why should Christians think about using green products when possible?

God blessed them; and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

Genesis 1:28

We are stewards of God’s creation, and as such it is important to try to do what we can to be good stewards of what He has put us in charge of.

No, this world is not our home, but that does not mean that we should not try our best to take care of it.

Another side of the coin is that it is very often being good stewards of our bodies and finances.

These are some of the products that I use to try to help take better care of the earth, and our bodies.

 Reusable Shopping and Produce Bags

According to the Wall Street Journal, the US goes through 100 billion plastic shopping bags each year. Less than 5% are recycled, and they take an estimated 1,000 years to biodegrade. That is a whole lot of crud piling up on the earth. For more information on plastic bags and there effects on the environment, you can check out the plastic bag fact sheet.

Cloth Diapers and Wipes

This has saved us a ton of money, and has kept a lot of diapers out of the landfill! Three kids and a combined diapering time of 8 years (4+3+1)so far.

The Union of Concerned Scientists has estimated about 18 billion diapers are thrown into landfills every year. In 1998 a study by the EPA found that diapers made up about 2.1% of garbage in the landfill that year (about 3.4 million tons!).

We use mostly prefolds and covers. For wipes we have a combination of baby wash cloths, soft old tshirt squares, and some flannel ones the we either made or bought. Most disposable diapers are filled with toxic chemicals, so we see this as being a good steward of our finances, our children’s health, and the earth. I hope to get a post up about it one day!

Glass Water Bottles

Americans used about 50 billion plastic water bottles last year. However, the U.S.’s recycling rate for plastic is only 23 percent, which means 38 billion water bottles – more than $1 billion worth of plastic – are wasted each year.

Plastic is also made with some really nasty chemicals (including fluorene-9-bisphenol, or BHFP for short-which has shown to cause uterine problems and miscarriages in mice). For more information on BHFP in water bottles, you can click here.

We have tried a couple of different types of glass water bottles, and we have found that we really like the Camelbaks because of their durability and warranty. Unfortunately, they have stopped producing them. There are a few available on Amazon, but they are pricey.

The Contigo Glass bottle is pretty durable, and works fairly well. I have no love for the mouth pieces though, they become moldy over time and do not come apart to clean, so you have to replace the lids. The Ello Wren look amazing, but the cap breaks very easily, which can lead to the whole bottle plummeting to the floor and, since it’s glass it doesn’t end well. The silicone sleeve also does not come off easily, but

Applesauce/Yogurt/Smoothie Pouches

My children love applesauce, and in a pouch it is an easy snack to carry with us. These are great because they are reusable, and I can also save money buying a big jar of apple sauce instead of the individual pouches.

Reusable Sandwich, Snack and Freezer Bags

We use these all of the time for snacks for story times, church, the zoo, and just running errands. There are lots of fun patterns and colors to choose from. They have saved us money and saved baggies going to the landfill.

The Misto

I love using this one! Oil sprays that you get from the store have all kinds of additives, this allows me to use straight up oil, and still get the spray that is needed at times.

Silicone Popsicle Molds

These are such fun, and they cut down on packaging and exposure to plastics.

Feminine Hygiene Products

Since I have been pregnant and exclusively nursing/or the last several years, I have not had too much need for these, but I have gone green with Aunt Flow. I am planning a post on this topic sometime in the future, but I highly recommend Stichin’ Pretties for mama cloth, and the Meluna Cup for the cup option (far more customizable than the Diva cup that is the big name in menstrual cups). Conventional pads and tampons are full of toxic chemicals, costing a lot of money, and making a big impact on the environment.

Beeswrap

This great product cuts out the need for plastic wrap. It can also be used to wrap sandwiches. I am playing around with making my own, but I am not quite happy with it yet.
What are some of your favorite green products? Have you tried any of these before? What did you think?

  1. Double WOW! This really made me think. I’ve heard for years we shouldn’t be concerned about environment because it isn’t our home. This really gave me a fresh perspective.

  2. WOW! I should be more environment conscious probably cause the only one on here I already do is reusable grocery bags….but I live in Europe and you have to pay for plastic bags at most stores or bring your own…one step at a time I guess!! Thanks for the post, I’ll try adding more of this to my habits!!
