I ran across this post from One Good Thing By Jillee and had to give it a try.
Homemade Gel Air Freshener
- 1 cup water
- 2 packages unflavored gelatin (since it’s not being consumed, I used Knox brand)
- 20 drops essential oils
- heat safe jars (flat pints or two small half pint canning jars work well)
Heat water to boiling and add salt, stirring until dissolved. Slowly add gelatin (going too fast can leave clumps that can be worked out, but they are a pain). Cut heat and pour into jar(s).
Add essential oils and allow to cool, stirring gently every so often to incorporate the oils.
Store with a vented lid (Jillee suggests a lid with a straw hole or punching holes in a lid-I grabbed one with a straw hole). You can leave them uncovered, but as Jillee notes, they dry out faster.
One of Jillee’s readers mentioned that she adds 1 tablespoon of vodka for a clearer finish.
Jillee also gives some ideas for coloring and using fake flowers in your jars, so check it out (since it is not being eaten, fake food color is no biggie).
