One of the easiest ways to make your home smell delicious is to add a few items to a pot of simmering water. I have done this one for years!

Note: If you are prone to forgetting things on the stove, set a timer for every 15 minutes or so to check on the pot.

I like to use oranges that are getting a little over-ripe so that they do not go to waste.

  • 2-4 oranges, cut in half or sliced up
  • 1-2 cinnamon sticks
  • 6-12 whole cloves
  • 1/8-1/4 teaspoon of freshly grated nutmeg (yes, it really does make a difference!)
  • water to fill pot to within a couple of inches of the top

Set on a low simmer, check frequently, adding water as needed.

I use it for a day or two, then use the orange pieces to freshen up the garbage disposal and saving the cinnamon sticks when done, letting them dry out to use in the next simmer pot.

  1. That is my favorite thing to do as well. Sometimes I even stud the whole orange with cloves. 🙂
