Vanilla Sugar
A gourmet ingredient that is so simple to make, you will never spend the money on buying it premade again!
Most recipes call for putting a few vanilla beans in a jar with a bunch of sugar and letting it set for weeks. This one is almost as easy and you can use it right away. I have never actually tasted straight premade vanilla sugar, so I cannot say it has a better, stronger taste, but I really enjoy the flavor it brings to recipes.
Swap it out in your favorite sweet recipes for a lovely flavor boost. We have been cutting back on sugar, so this recipe lasts a long time.

Recipe
- 2 cups of organic sugar
per - 1 vanilla bean
You’ll need a food processor. I have a very small one that holds maybe 1 cup, so I have to work in batches, though if you have a large one just chuck it all in at once. I have gotten a large processor that works very well for this and I do not have to work in batches!Â
Cut your vanilla beans in half length wise.
Next cut them into 1 inch snippets. Be sure to wipe the seeds from the knife (or scissors) you use!
Put bean pieces and sugar in food processor and whiz it for a minute or so.
Viola, you have vanilla sugar.
Store in an air-tight container. I leave the bean pieces in and sift them out before I use the sugar.
It may clump a bit due to the moisture in the beans, but a gentle shake of the container will break it right up.
Swap out vanilla sugar for plain sugar in your favorite recipes. My favorite swaps so far are in banana bread and angel food cake. I also like to make Cocoa Noile Cookies with this.
Oh how I just love this idea!!! I want to pin it, but don’t see an option for that…? This is just such an easy way to make such a yummy treat!! I would add that sugar to EVERYTHING… especially my coffee! 🙂
Hey! I just figured it out, you may need to refresh the page and it should show up at the bottom of the post. Thanks!
yummy yummy and yummy – and in the immortal words of the late Jackie Gleason – “how sweet it is”! 😀
Sounds good. I’ve never run into a recipe using vanilla sugar. I wonder how it impact a cake’s recipe if I switched it for plain sugar?
It adds a subtle vanilla flavor. It’s quite nice.
Robbi, wow…so simple! What’s your favorite thing to use this in? Besides coffee? 🙂
I my favorite recipe is an Italian Coco Meringue (I’ll be sharing the recipe soon) cookie and angel food cake. I actually don’t drink coffee, but if coffee is your thing, I bet it’s tasty!
So simple…I can handle this. 🙂 Vanilla is one of my favorite ingredients.
Yum! I’m dreaming of dipping fresh strawberries into this vanilla sugar. Can’t wait to try it!
