I have done a few Good Morning Girls Bible Studies, and I really enjoy them. I have yet to find a group, but even doing it on my own, or with one or two friends online has been such as great learning experience.
The latest study is Proverbs, and I am taking part. This is actually the second week, but last week was so busy I did not find time to blog about it. This might be somewhat disjointed, or not have too much of a flow, but here’s what God’s been showing me in study this week.
I really get a lot out of it when I use the SOAP method of studying the Word. The SOAP acronym stands for.
Scripture-Writing out the Scripture
Observations-Jotting notes on observations about the passage
Application-Writing out how I can apply it to my daily walk
Prayer-Praying it or praying about it (Help me….)
I also use different colored pens. I write the Scriptures in one color, underline things that stick out to me/I want to really remember in another color and underline words I want to study in a third.
All of this week in reading/writing out (chapters 6-10), I kept asking myself, “Am I teachable?”
Over and over we’re told to write these words on our hearts, to keep the commands. As a parent, I want my children to listen and obey, to take what I say to heart. That is what this Word is for, to be listened to and taken to heart.
Proverbs 10 stuck out to me particularly. Among the verses comparing the fool and the wise, the righteous and the wicked, we are given these verses:
The memory of the righteous will be a blessing, but the name of the wicked will not
Proverbs 10:7
I want my memory to be a blessing to my kids and their kids. What a wonderful legacy to leave! More will be coming on this in a future post.
As I write this, I am reminded of my old choir director who is retiring this weekend. What a blessing his memory will be in our church, and all the lives he’s touched.
He who heeds discipline shows the way to life, but whoever ignores correction leads other astray.
Proverbs 10:17
The world is watching us. Our kids are watching us. What are we modeling for them? Are we showing them humility and teach-ability? Compassion and love? Respect and honor? A desperate desire to seek God and His instruction?
The lips of the righteous nourish many, but fools die for lack of judgement.
Proverbs 10:21
I want my lips to nourish. To build up. To encourage. To, as verse 11 says, be “a fountain of life”. This will also be in a future post in more depth!
This has been a tiny peek inside my mind this week in my study of the Word.
Writing out a full chapter at a time has been a challenge, but I would encourage you to give it a shot if you’ve never done it. I am a doodler and a note taker…I need to write to better process things, and writing out the Word really makes it sink in.
