Sweet Moments, Spring Plans and The Aprons & Pearls Linkup

Spring fever has hit our house, big time. The children are itching to get outside and play more, though it is cool enough out that they do not stay long.
Pollen is also in the air…our youngest, D, and I are really feeling it. I have been diffusing lemon, lavender, and rosalina oils to help.
I have shared before about how the children initiating us reminds me of how we are to imitate our Heavenly Father, and the sense of responsibility that it brings because we are setting the example for them.
Yesterday I had another of those moments.
D came to me bringing pretend food to feed me. He set it down, folded his hands, and tried to say pray. Hormonal pregnant mama might have cried some tears of joy/pride…
They are watching, I think more than we realize. Faith at home is so important!
L, our girlie, is loving the flowers blooming (okay, mostly dandelions, but they are still flowers!). She loves picking them for people. “Picking flowers for people is my way to say ‘I love you'”.  I have several smaller flowers pressing in my Bible now.
Last week I shared our Spring Bucket List. Just some ways that I want to be intentional about making memories, and opening the door for teachable moments.
I also shared about our Intentional Easter Traditions.
The seeds that we started last week are sprouting, so thoughts are turning to our garden once again. Hubby is going to redo our raised beds soon. The children are enjoying watching our plants grow.
Still working on a few posts, some research heavy pieces that are not moving as fast as I would like! The last two weeks I have managed to get out more posts than usual, but sleep has suffered…the children being sinus-y with allergies has not helped either.
All of that to say I am slowing down just a bit, focusing on trying to get to bed earlier instead of staying up late to blog.
On to the linkup!

36 Songs For Tough Days

36 Songs for Tough Days @gosdchicki
One of those days. I’ve had a lot of them many times. Here are some songs that have each ministered to me in difficult times, and encouraged me to press on.
Music is such a powerful medium. We can learn a song as a child and remember it 20 years later. These songs all hold truths that are great to tuck away for hard days. I have shared a bit before about how songs have ministered to me in my posts His Grace Is Enough and Peace.
I would love to share the snippets of lyrics that have really spoken to me, but as a blogger I have to abide by copyright laws, and posting more than a song title is considered infringement.

Natural Mama's Guide to Midwife Questions

Natural Mama's Guide to Midwife Questions @godschicki
Finding a supportive birth team is key to a good birth. You do not want to have to be fighting for your birth during the whole pregnancy and labor. Birth is not a sickness to be managed.

Homebirth Midwife vs Hospital Midwife

We homebirth, so these questions are geared towards finding a homebirth midwife.
I plan to write more on homebirth later, but let me just say that it will take a real emergency to get me to birth in a hospital again.
Unfortunately assisted homebirth is illegal in some states, so do make sure that you check your state laws before getting too far down that road. Doctors and hospitals often lobby against it.
It should be noted that there is typically a huge difference between a homebirth midwife and a midwife that works out of a medical practice.
Homebirth midwives are typically more natural minded, whereas ones in a medical practice have to abide by that practices guidelines and hospital guidelines.
Also, if you see a midwife in a medical practice, it is likely that you will have to see all of the doctors there as well since you cannot have a guarantee of who will actually be attending your birth.

Do Your Research

{This post contains affiliate links. This means that the price that you pay does not change, but I get a small commission when you purchase items through my links}

I suggest finding a local homebirth/natural birth group (Facebook is a great resource in this area). Often they can give you recommendations on doctors, nurses, and hospitals in the area that are natural birth friendly.
As with the pediatrician questions, do your research before visiting so that you know your stance on these topics. I highly recommend Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way, Husband Coached Childbirth, and Ina May Gaskin’s Guide To Childbirth are great resources, as is the Evidence Based Birth site.
A Natural Mama's Guide to Midwife Questions @godschicki

Labor/Postpartum

  • Are you trained in neonatal resuscitation?
  • Do you do PKU testing?
  • How do you feel about dad catching?
  • How do you feel about some or all of the kids being present (with someone specifically there to take them out if need be)?

Spring Thoughts and The Aprons & Pearls Linkup

Totally dropped the ball on posts the past two weeks.
Littlest man is going through a phase of no sleep and hates being set down for anytime at all. While I love baby wearing, I can’t wear him in the front and type very well, and I can’t sit comfortably with him on my back… And times that he does play, I have stuff around the house to catch up on.
I always feel like typing on my phone (as I am now) is so much slower, so I usually don’t bother. Slow but steady might just be the way to go for now.
Spring is here. Flowers and trees are blooming (just ask our seasonal allergies!). Days are getting nicer, so the kids and I get outside more.
Spring means planning the garden. I have been weeding out the raised bed. I love digging in the garden. Preparing the soil for the seeds.
I love lessons from the garden. There’s a good one in preparing the soil, I hope to get it typed up soon.
I’ve had another guest post published. Nichole over at Defying Shadows is doing a Fearless 365 series and I shared what Psalm 56:4 means to me.
If you missed it, I did a Guest post on Making Grocery Shopping Easier for The Stay-at-home Mom Survival Guide.
I also have a giveaway going on right now. You can check out how to enter the giveaway of His Word Alone here.

Magnesium Oil DIY

Magnesium Oil DIY @godschicki
Magnesium is a mineral that at least 68% of people are deficient in, since it affects 300 bodily functions, this is kind of a big deal.
Our diets, even when we eat well, can often lack it because, due to today’s farming practices and chemical treatment of crops, it is being depleted from even the real food sources we use.
Absorbed most efficiently through our skin (our skin absorbs everything we put on it, which is why we should be careful of what we put on it), magnesium ‘oil’ is a great way to get the magnesium your body needs.
While not actually an oil, it does feel like oil on the skin.
I have been using magnesium oil for a couple of years now, and have noticed when I use it before bed, I sleep better. This is one of the big effects I have heard from those who use it. I regularly apply it to my back and legs before bed.
Paired with good hydration during the day, I find I get much better quality of sleep, even if not great quantity (due to kids waking).
Another way I use it is for sore or crampy muscles and the pregnancy-induced restless leg issue. (Dr Axe has a great list of other ways it can help your body, including migraines, diabetes, painful PMS, and high blood pressure among others!)
It also helps bruises go away faster and can help with constipation.
It can also greatly improve mood and lessen anxiety.
It can tingle, or sting/itch a bit at first, if you are very deficient in it. It is best to start with a small patch. The feet are typically a good place to start.
Personally, it tingled the first few times I used it, and if I go a long time without using it I find it tingles until I have used it for a few days. It does sting if applied to cuts/boo-boos, so be careful. Also, do not apply to freshly shaved legs….yeah, personal experience talking here!
I have not tried it yet, but I have heard making lotion or body butter cuts down on the tingle.
Hubby uses it after he’s worked hard in the yard to prevent sore muscles (or, for sore muscles if he forgets).
Buying premade oil is pretty pricey, like $18/8oz. For around $11 I can make a whole quart!

This ‘recipe’ contains affiliate links. While it does not change the price of the item you click on, I do get a small commission if you purchase items through my link.

Magnesium Oil

  • 1/2 cup Magnesium Chloride Flakes
  • 1/2 cup boiling distilled water (I have used water filtered with our ZeroWater Filter before, and not had issues, but it improves shelf life to use distilled)
  • Medium size sauce pot (even if you are just using 1/2 cup of each, when you add the magnesium it bubbles up pretty big)
  • Bottle to store in (I make a bigger recipe-like quadruple it, so I use a quart sized mason jar to store the majority of it, then put some in a travel size little bottle to use everyday. I have tried a spray bottle and do not like it as much.)

Bring water to a boil, remove from heat and add flakes. Mix well until flakes are dissolved. Cool before storing.
For a bigger batch, just keep in mind that you should use a 1:1 ratio of water to magnesium flakes.

I am not a doctor or medical expert, please be sure to talk with your health care provider before adding any type of supplement to your lifestyle.

This great page has a lot more information on magnesium deficiency and the vital role magnesium plays in our body’s processes and how to get more magnesium and what mistakes you can be making in your diet that can cause your body to waste magnesium:

29 Mood & Energy Boosting Essential Oil Diffuser Blends

29 Mood & Energy Boosting Essential Oil Blends @godschicki
As I have written about before, diffusing essential oils is a great way to make your home smell good. The bonus with essential oils is they affect our moods and mindsets.
Lemon, lime, bergamot, grapefruit, basil, peppermint (do not use if you have kids under 10 in the house or are nursing), thyme, tangerine, cypress and cedarwood, sandalwood, spearmint (do not use if you have kids under 10 or are nursing), ylang ylang, white fir, lemongrass (do not use while pregnant), eucalyptus (do not use around kids under 20 or while pregnant) and cinnamon (do not use while pregnant) are all uplifting and energizing.
Rosemary (do not use around kids under 10 or while pregnant), frankincense, lavender, Douglas fir, cypress, juniper berry, sandalwood, ylang ylang, vetiver and black pepper are all great for helping to focus and concentration.
My go-to is:

  • 3 drops lemon
  • 3 drops lime
  • 1 drops basil

Before diffusing, please make sure you read these posts if you have not already done so, since they tackle safety using essential oils in this method:

Essential Oil Sleep Blend

Good Sleep Blend @godschicki
Here is my sleepy time blend that we use before bed. We do not use it every night, but maybe once a week or so. I was calling it Sleepy Head, but a quick Google found that there is a brand with that particular name as one of their blends….

This list contains affiliate links. While it does not change the price of the item you click on, I do get a small commission if you purchase items through my link.

Good Sleep Essential Oil  Blend

  • 1 10ml glass roller bottle (I use these)
  • 1 drop lavender oil
  • 1 drop vetiver oil
  • 1 drop roman chamomile oil
  • 1 drop sweet orange oil
  • About 2 teaspoons carrier oil (I use sweet almond, but you could also use avocado, apricot or grapeseed)

Add essential oils to your roller bottle and top off with carrier oil.
You do want to be sure no one that will be using it is allergic to the individual oils.
Apply to top of your big toe before bed. As with all essential oil related posts, please check out this post on Essential Oil Safety if you have not done so already.
