How To Have A More Productive Day

TO BALI (4)
I wish I could say I do all of this at the same time and always accomplish everything. I feel slightly hypocritical for posting these ideas, but I have found them helpful, if I do them! I am working on it, but have not consistently done it all, but when I do get at least some of these done, I know that I am a lot more productive. I am really trying to implement them all slowly into a routine.

Start the Night Before

A productive day truly starts the night before!

  • Have a plan. Write down 5-10 things you want to accomplish. Write down daily chores. You may not get to all of these things, but having a plan and goals is what we are going for. Tackle the most important ones first, then work down the list.
  • Prepare what you can. Can you make lunches for work/school ahead of time? Can you lay out clothes? Pack backpacks or the diaper bag?
  • Do the dishes. Coming down to a clean sink is so much better than coming down to a dirty one! When I come down to one filled with dirty dishes I feel as if I am already behind.
  • Throw a load of laundry in the wash. I am on team laundry everyday (vs once a week laundry day). If I can throw a load in before bed, I can hang them out or start them in the dryer in the morning.
  • Tidy up what you can. Picking up a even a few things can totally change a space.
  • Plan to get 8 hours of sleep.

Hydrate

Hydration is key to focus and energy and a good night’s sleep, which leads to better days! For some tips on keeping hydrated, you can check out this post.

Shower and Dress

When I get dressed (besides sweat pants and a stained tshirt-something that I need to wear an apron over), and put on an apron, it changes my mind set. I wrote a post on this called Dressing for the Day.

Spend Time With The Lord

Spending time in the Word, prayer and worship helps to refocus and remember why you are doing what you are doing.
Taking off the old self, renewing our minds and committing our plans and work to the Lord is so important. (Ephesians 4:22-24, Romans 12:2, Proverbs 16:3, Colossians 3:23-24)
It is important to spend time with the Lord so that He can fill us. We cannot pour from an empty pitcher.

Let the Sunshine In

This isn’t possible all over the world, and it is kind of a downer on cloudy days, but if they house is filled with natural light, I feel much more motivated.

Diffuse Some Uplifting Oil

You can check out my post with 29 Mood and Energy Boosting Essential Oil Diffuser Blends here. (Please read the Essential Oil Safety Page if you have not done it already!)

Music & Podcasts

Put on some upbeat praise and worship music to help get you going and keep you focused.
I have only consistently listened to a few podcasts, but they are usually pretty good stuff.

As for music, I find that songs that pour into my spirit as I am pouring myself out are the best. I am trying to figure out how to share my worship music playlist, but for now, if you search Modern Worship on Google Play Music, you’ll get similar sounds.

Timers

I must admit, this is the last one I am implementing, I plan on working on it this week. I do not know why exactly I am so hesitant/resistant to the idea. Too many games of Perfection growing up? Maybe it seems silly? I do not know, but I am giving it a shot this week.
The plan is to set timers, for 10-15 minutes and work on one task/area for that time, taking a 15 minute break every hour to spend with the kids and rehydrating. I want to do this for a few hour each day until I get through everything.

Do you have any tips for more productive days? Is this something that you have struggled with? Which one of these will you incorporate into your routine to make your day more productive?

15 Tips For A Better Night's Sleep

15 Tips for a Better Night's Sleep @godschicki
Sleep is something I definitely have not gotten enough of over the past couple of years. With two kids 3 and under, who until recently still nursed during the night, getting sleep can be rough. Despite my lack of sleep, I have learned some tricks for getting better quality sleep.
It is a key to Having a More Productive Day.
Our bodies require sleep, and when we do not get enough, it takes it’s toll.

Physical Activity

This is one I need to get better at! Experts say that getting 150 minutes of physical activity during the week greatly improves sleep quality and duration. I know that when we go out more and I am walking the kids around and lifting on them, I do sleep better!

Keeping Hydrated During the Day

I have shared briefly about how hydrations is so important in our lives in this post. Sleep is greatly affected by our hydration levels. Your brain is about 85% water, so when you are dehydrated, it can cause our brains to not function as well, including when we are asleep.

Avoiding Caffeine

Caffeine is not good for you, so cutting it out altogether is best, but avoiding it past 2 is critical to a good night’s sleep. A recent study found that “caffeine consumed even 6 hours before bedtime resulted in significantly diminished sleep quality and sleep quantity”.

Turn Off Electronics an Hour Before Bed/Kicking Electronics Out of The Bedroom or Powering Them Down.

I really need to get better at this, but I know that when everything is off, my sleep is so much better. Exposure to the light (and electronic signals) emitted by electronics can seriously affect sleep time, sleep quality and alertness during the day.
In this day and age it is hard, but worth it!

Tart Cherry Juice or Gummies.

Tart cherry juice contains is rich in melatonin which helps control sleep and waking cycles. This recipe for gummies from WellnessMama is a great one designed to help get a good night’s sleep.

Essential Oils

I made of blend of oils that helps quiet the mind and relax the body, you can find that post here.

Magnesium Oil

Magnesium oil is probably my best advice. I know that whenever I use it, I get a much better quality sleep. Instead of paying $18-20 for 8 ounces, I make my own-for about $11 a quart! You can read about that here.

Keep Cool

I find that if we keep the thermostat between 65 and 72 degrees (f) I get much better sleep. It really is about comfort though, too hot or too cold and you will not get as good a night’s sleep.

Blackout

Cutting off all lights and using blackout curtains is a big one. Our bodies get better sleep when it is dark. The production of melatonin is inhibited by light.
Living in the city, there are a lot of street lights to deal with. Cutting out a night light can help kids get better sleep. We have not done night lights unless we have a very new baby in the room (so I can see to nurse without waking the whole gang).

Write It Down

Quieting my mind is hard. As a mom, there are so many things to do and remember. I find that writing down what is on my mind helps me be able to let go of those thoughts without the fear of forgetting.

Sleep Spots

Acupressure/reflexology can help get a good night’s sleep as well. My kids like for me to rub between their eyebrows just where the bridge of the nose meets the forehead, which is a spot that can help sleep come easier by helping to quiet the mind. Some other points can be found here.

Prayer

My favorite way to bid the day ado, casting my cares upon the Lord and giving thanks for what He has done in my life. The peace that only He can give is truly the best way to get a good night’s rest.

Do you have trouble getting a good night’s sleep? Did I miss any tips that have helped you?

Magnesium Oil DIY

Magnesium Oil DIY @godschicki
Magnesium is a mineral that at least 68% of people are deficient in, since it affects 300 bodily functions, this is kind of a big deal.
Our diets, even when we eat well, can often lack it because, due to today’s farming practices and chemical treatment of crops, it is being depleted from even the real food sources we use.
Absorbed most efficiently through our skin (our skin absorbs everything we put on it, which is why we should be careful of what we put on it), magnesium ‘oil’ is a great way to get the magnesium your body needs.
While not actually an oil, it does feel like oil on the skin.
I have been using magnesium oil for a couple of years now, and have noticed when I use it before bed, I sleep better. This is one of the big effects I have heard from those who use it. I regularly apply it to my back and legs before bed.
Paired with good hydration during the day, I find I get much better quality of sleep, even if not great quantity (due to kids waking).
Another way I use it is for sore or crampy muscles and the pregnancy-induced restless leg issue. (Dr Axe has a great list of other ways it can help your body, including migraines, diabetes, painful PMS, and high blood pressure among others!)
It also helps bruises go away faster and can help with constipation.
It can also greatly improve mood and lessen anxiety.
It can tingle, or sting/itch a bit at first, if you are very deficient in it. It is best to start with a small patch. The feet are typically a good place to start.
Personally, it tingled the first few times I used it, and if I go a long time without using it I find it tingles until I have used it for a few days. It does sting if applied to cuts/boo-boos, so be careful. Also, do not apply to freshly shaved legs….yeah, personal experience talking here!
I have not tried it yet, but I have heard making lotion or body butter cuts down on the tingle.
Hubby uses it after he’s worked hard in the yard to prevent sore muscles (or, for sore muscles if he forgets).
Buying premade oil is pretty pricey, like $18/8oz. For around $11 I can make a whole quart!

This ‘recipe’ contains affiliate links. While it does not change the price of the item you click on, I do get a small commission if you purchase items through my link.

Magnesium Oil

  • 1/2 cup Magnesium Chloride Flakes
  • 1/2 cup boiling distilled water (I have used water filtered with our ZeroWater Filter before, and not had issues, but it improves shelf life to use distilled)
  • Medium size sauce pot (even if you are just using 1/2 cup of each, when you add the magnesium it bubbles up pretty big)
  • Bottle to store in (I make a bigger recipe-like quadruple it, so I use a quart sized mason jar to store the majority of it, then put some in a travel size little bottle to use everyday. I have tried a spray bottle and do not like it as much.)

Bring water to a boil, remove from heat and add flakes. Mix well until flakes are dissolved. Cool before storing.
For a bigger batch, just keep in mind that you should use a 1:1 ratio of water to magnesium flakes.

I am not a doctor or medical expert, please be sure to talk with your health care provider before adding any type of supplement to your lifestyle.

This great page has a lot more information on magnesium deficiency and the vital role magnesium plays in our body’s processes and how to get more magnesium and what mistakes you can be making in your diet that can cause your body to waste magnesium:

29 Mood & Energy Boosting Essential Oil Diffuser Blends

29 Mood & Energy Boosting Essential Oil Blends @godschicki
As I have written about before, diffusing essential oils is a great way to make your home smell good. The bonus with essential oils is they affect our moods and mindsets.
Lemon, lime, bergamot, grapefruit, basil, peppermint (do not use if you have kids under 10 in the house or are nursing), thyme, tangerine, cypress and cedarwood, sandalwood, spearmint (do not use if you have kids under 10 or are nursing), ylang ylang, white fir, lemongrass (do not use while pregnant), eucalyptus (do not use around kids under 20 or while pregnant) and cinnamon (do not use while pregnant) are all uplifting and energizing.
Rosemary (do not use around kids under 10 or while pregnant), frankincense, lavender, Douglas fir, cypress, juniper berry, sandalwood, ylang ylang, vetiver and black pepper are all great for helping to focus and concentration.
My go-to is:

  • 3 drops lemon
  • 3 drops lime
  • 1 drops basil

Before diffusing, please make sure you read these posts if you have not already done so, since they tackle safety using essential oils in this method:

Essential Oil Sleep Blend

Good Sleep Blend @godschicki
Here is my sleepy time blend that we use before bed. We do not use it every night, but maybe once a week or so. I was calling it Sleepy Head, but a quick Google found that there is a brand with that particular name as one of their blends….

This list contains affiliate links. While it does not change the price of the item you click on, I do get a small commission if you purchase items through my link.

Good Sleep Essential Oil  Blend

  • 1 10ml glass roller bottle (I use these)
  • 1 drop lavender oil
  • 1 drop vetiver oil
  • 1 drop roman chamomile oil
  • 1 drop sweet orange oil
  • About 2 teaspoons carrier oil (I use sweet almond, but you could also use avocado, apricot or grapeseed)

Add essential oils to your roller bottle and top off with carrier oil.
You do want to be sure no one that will be using it is allergic to the individual oils.
Apply to top of your big toe before bed. As with all essential oil related posts, please check out this post on Essential Oil Safety if you have not done so already.

The Olympics

The Olympics @godschicki
I once shared on my old blog about my love for the Olympic games. I might bring that post over later, but for now…
I have always loved them. I got to stay up late and watch the events. I remember some amazing Olympic moments.
The dad who ran onto the track to help his son cross the finish line. Gymnasts and divers competing on injured legs and feet to win gold. Micheal Phelp’s swims.
These athletes that do such amazing things do not just decide willy nilly to enter the events. They go through years of intense training to build their strength. To condition their bodies to perform.
It brings 1 Corinthians 9:24-26 to mind.

Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win.  Everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things. They then do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. Therefore I run in such a way, as not without aim; I box in such a way, as not beating the air;  but I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that, after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified.

1 Corinthians 9:24-27

As followers of Christ we should have the same drive and focus. The passion and discipline.

My favorite moment of Rio 2016 (so far, but I doubt it will be topped), is when Simone Manuel tied for gold in the women’s 100-meter freestyle. Her post meet interview was my favorite part. The first words out of her mouth were giving “all the glory to God”.  I want to be like that!

Our race is not a sprint, but a marathon. Running it is hard. If we start looking around instead of at the finish line, we will go off course and stumble.

Not that I have already obtained it or have already become perfect, but I press on so that I may lay hold of that for which also I was laid hold of by Christ Jesus.  Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 3:12-14

Let us press on for the prize. Focusing on Him. Counting all else as loss.

Do you watch the Olympics? Do you have a favorite moment? Have you ever considered the lessons we can learn from the games and athletes?

Getting Drunk

Getting Drunk @godschicki

Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.

Ephesians 5:15-20 (Emphasis mine)

Let’s think about this picture Paul gives us for a minute.
Getting drunk affects many aspects of one’s life.
It affects the way you see things, your vision.
It affects how you feel.
It affects your speech, how you talk.
It affects the way you walk.
It affects the way you think.
Here Paul tells us not get drunk with wine, but be filled with the Spirit.
The word used for fill here is plēroō, which means “to fill to the top: so that nothing shall be wanting to full measure, fill to the brim”.
We, as followers of Christ, should be so full of the Spirit that it affects every part of our life. How we walk, talk, think and see things.
Over and over in Scripture we are told that our lives should be different if we are following Christ. On our own this is impossible. We need to be filled with the Spirit who enables us.
Unless we are spending time with Him, in His Word, in prayer, allowing Him to point out the weeds of sin in our lives and changing what He calls us to, we will be no different.
Let me ask you this. Without anything that you say (because talk is cheap, and your walk is what speaks volumes to the world), would people see that your life is different? How?  What is different about your life? How does your faith affect those around you on a daily basis?
In other places Scripture talks about Gracefilled Speech, Being Peculiar, and Dressing for the Day.

Tweet: As followers of Christ should be so full of the Spirit that it affects every part of our life. How we walk, talk, think, how we see things.
